"WINTER BONSAI" BY ROB HUNTLEY
Although not really a Japanese bonsai tree, I have nevertheless titled this image Winter Bonsai as it bears a strong similarity with its gnarled branches and twigs. If you were to guess that it was a shrub growing in the open that has lost its summer leaf cover and is now surrounded by fresh snow you would be close. In actual fact, it is the end of a large dead tree branch that has dropped to the ground at the edge of the Ottawa River. The main part of the branch was also snow covered with only the shrub-like end branches turning upwards. The broad expanse of white in the background is the snow-covered frozen river. Since shooting this image I have returned season after season, year after year, to see if I can capture another nice shot. It is along one of my occasional walking routes not far from home.
